Have you heard of grappa before? If you live near the Italian border, you almost certainly have, but we can easily forgive those others who are about to hear of this excellent drink for the first time today.
Grappa, a fragrant alcoholic beverage, is a brandy made from grape pomace. It is practically the national drink of Italians, as they enjoy it on many different occasions.
Italians think that it is a good digestive, so they indulge in it after lunch or with coffee, as grappa further enhances its flavour. They also like to have a nip on cold winter days to keep warm.
The flavour … that isn’t?
Grappa contains between 35 and 60% alcohol and has a very specific flavour. To some the great Italian love of grappa is surprising, as it is a very strong alcoholic beverage with no particular flavour. Compared to fruit brandy, which retains the aroma of the fruit from which it is distilled, grappa is made from pomace, the remnants of grapes after pressing. Therefore, there is little aroma left in it. Nevertheless, it is not allowed to call it a pomace brandy, as the name grappa is protected in Italy.
Do you know the story of the origin of grappa?
Legend says that grappa originated in Bassano del Grappa, a town near Padua. In 1779, Bertolo Nardini bought an inn right next to the famous bridge over the river Brenta and started brewing grappa and offering it to travellers heading across the bridge to Venice. He sold it to wish them a peaceful journey and good dealings.
From its creation up until the 1960s, it was considered a brandy for workers and farmers. But then Mrs Giannola Nonino began conducting experiments in her distillery not far from Udine, where grappa had been brewed since 1897. While grappa was usually distilled from a mixture of different pomaces, Mrs Nonino distilled pomaces separated by variety.
At first, her grappa was not popular, but the cunning lady skilfully advertised it with free tastings for journalists and at government banquets. She poured the drink into beautiful bottles, not into “medicinal” bottles like others. And so, thanks to Mrs Nonino, grappa became famous and as popular as wine.
Common questions
What glasses are used for grappa?
The key things to consider when serving grappa are the temperature and the glass, which should have a stem and a particular shape. A good grappa, like a good wine, should be swirled and smelled before drinking.
At what temperature is grappa served?
Always serve grappa cold. Most Italians keep a bottle of grappa right in the fridge, while the Grappa National Institute recommends that it be served at a temperature between 9 and 13 degrees Celsius.
